  • I have been dabbling with webs design for a few years now. This video really clarified what CSS is and how it works. Thanks so much!! Looking forward to the next video.

  • Soraya says:

Very informative video! The comparison of a house’s structure and decoration to html and css really made the differences clearer for me. Great job! I’m looking forward to the next video!

  • Lynn says:

Thank you for bringing me out of the dark ages. Great information.

  • Becky says:

Thanks for the video Marianne! I’m a (newbie) software developer. I primarily write in Rails but of course we need CSS and HTML to make everything look good. I love how you compared the two and made it so clear. I’m looking forward to the rest of the videos!

    • Marianne says:

Ah Becky, that’s great! I know nothing about Rails! But it’s great that you’re wanting to learn more HTML and CSS because a lot of developers I’ve worked with know absolutely nothing about it. Glad it made sense to you, thanks for watching!

  • Ramona Spires says:

I am a new blogger, and I want to learn all the information on making my blog stand out. This was extremely helpful to get a better understand of how HTML and CSS work.

  • Laura says:

Awesome video tutorial! Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing the next video. I’m in the process of building my blog (have a theme etc.) and would like to customize it a little.

  • Hi Marianne, I’m keen to learn more about CSS and what it can do. I’ve used some coding but am a novice looking to develop my skills more. A main reason now for me is to avoid adding plugins because of speed issues and also to do some tweaking of things like tables and TOC and more. It is fun when you see what you can do. Thanks

    • Marianne says:

Hey Mary-Anne, great to “see” you again! That’s awesome that you want to develop your skills more in CSS! I agree, it’s great when you can replace plugins with a little DIY code instead to speed up your site.

  • Loved it. Small, sensible steps!

  • Lizet says:

I´m so glad I signed up for this. I think if I take a little bit at a time, I´m going to get it.
Thanks so much for sharing! It was clear. Looking forward to the next one.

  • Rebecca says:

    Thanks Marianne,
I’m just starting on the blogging experience; getting the site together. And, you are quickly taking me from “please don’t let it bite me” to “look out, here I come”.
You come across as very personable, easy to relate to and understand. Very much appreciated.
    Blessings, Rebecca.

    • Marianne says:

Awww Rebecca, that makes my heart sing to hear it! That’s exactly what I wanted from anyone who watches this series, so thank you for verifying that it worked! <3

  • Heather says:

Great video and information! I am brand new to blogging and to be honest “programming/CSS/HTML” terrifies me! However, that being said, I want the freedom to be able to design and tweak my blog to my satisfaction. This series is exactly what I need(ed) to take me from “terrified” to “I’ve got this!” Thank you so much! I’m looking forward to the next video!

  • Bree says:

Thank you! I’ve had a blog for over ten years but I’ve never known how to do anything to it. The thought of HTML or CSS seemed absolutely foreign to me. Your video and explanations are great and I’m actually excited to learn! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge 🙂

  • Cathy says:

Thank you for this, Marianne. I just went to your website and found out where to change the font on a new website I’m setting up. Since it was to be the same as look on my other WordPress blog, your information told me where to go so I could copy and paste it. It worked like a charm!!! I am very happy!

  • Oh I love this video. So far, what are html and css for me? Still blur. Now I get it. Thank you for making this video.

  • Zidan says:

Thanks a lot sister , this video explains everything that a beginner needs, thats awesome ?

  • Renato says:

I’m very thankful that I’m here

  • OMG, to be honest, I didn’t expect much when I first visited DYOB and signed up for those free tutorials and stuff. I was a bit sceptical that it can’t be free just like that but I gave it a go and now I am here. I played this first video tutorial and even though it is not much, I think is much better to learn it by small steps rather than huge amount of information.
After this video, I finally feel like I actually understand at least something. Thank you so much. Cannot wait for next video.

    • Marianne says:

Wow Radka, that’s really awesome to hear! I definitely didn’t want to overwhelm right off the bat so I’m glad you got it. I’m really looking forward to hearing how the rest of the training is for you.

  • The url you showed on the screen at 8:30 to get more info on how to edit CSS on different platforms does not work. ;( And when I tried to search for it in your search bar, it only brought up these videos! Do you not talk about how to include/edit CSS in Squarespace?

  • Shannon says:

One of the best explanations of what CSS + what it does that I’ve heard! Excited for the rest of the training!

  • Neci says:

Hi Marianne! I love your whole blog, but this series is specifically tailored to my needs. Thank you so much for all you do for us!
